KOOTENAY COUNTRY PARTNERSHIP TO SHOWCASE OUR AREA Monday, September 21, 2009 Castlegar – The unique partnership of the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay/Boundary and East Kootenay, along with Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust, are gearing up to take the “Welcome to Kootenay Country” display to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Conference (UBCM) taking place in Vancouver at the end of September. This exhibit was previously showcased at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Calgary in June 2007 and the UBCM conference later that same year. Utilizing the theme “Welcome to Kootenay Country—Canada’s Camelot,” the large exhibit profiled industry, business and recreation, along with arts and culture across the region, while supporting the visibility of rural communities. Conference participants had the opportunity to learn what makes life in the Kootenays special through the exhibit’s overview of lifestyle, commercial and service amenities, as well as economic and tourism opportunities. This year’s Kootenay Country organizing committee is made up of Regional District of Central Kootenay directors—Mayor Ann Henderson of Salmo, Mayor Lawrence Chernoff of Castlegar and the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s Area J Director Gordon Zaitsoff. Audrey Repin, Columbia Power’s Director of Communications and Community Relations, rounds out the team. “Columbia Power is pleased to once again be working with representatives from our Regional Districts on this very exciting initiative,” said Repin. “It is an excellent opportunity to showcase all that our beautiful region has to offer.” During the tradeshow portion of the conference, regional representatives will take turns manning the Kootenay Country booth and distribute literature and other promotional materials to the delegates. As this year’s conference is leading up to February’s Olympics, a high turnout of participants is expected.
