Health and Safety Policy
Health and safety is a core value of Columbia Power Corporation. Our goal is to ensure every CPC employee and worker at CPC-managed projects and offices returns home from work safely at the end of each day. The construction, operation and maintenance of the CPC projects should be conducted in a manner to protect the health ad safety of employees, workers, contractors and members of the public.
POLICY:
Our commitment to health and safety will be achieved through the following actions:- CPC will establish a "safety culture" amongst CPC employees through its leadership, values and behaviours and will provide the training, awareness, and resource allocation, where safety becomes a primary consideration in all actions;
- This policy will be communicated to employees and others working under the control of CPC and open dialogue on health and safety issues will be encouraged;
- Health and safety hazards will be identified and actions will be taken to eliminate or control the hazards to as low a level as reasonably practicable including the establishment of safe work practices and the provision of appropriate safety equipment;
- Health and safety considerations are a primary criteria integral to project design, construction, operations and maintenance and will be allocated an appropriate level of resources;
- Health and safety will be acknowledged and valued in the evaluation of project bids and the development of all contracts;
- Compliance with the BC Worker Compensation Act, other applicable occupational health and safety legislation, and related corporate commitments;
- Maintaining, reviewing, and continually improving a safety management system that is consistent with the industry standard and that establishes measurable internal OHS performance objectives and targets.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- All employees have a personal commitment to safety and are responsible for their own health and safety and that of others around them by identifying hazards, attending required safety training, following established safe work practices, and, reporting unsafe work practices;
- Supervisors are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of the employees under their supervision. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring their direct reports obtain the necessary instruction and safety training and are provided with the appropriate level of safety equipment for their roles and responsibilities;
- Contract managers are responsible to ensure that the principles of this health and safety policy are utilized in all phases of the contracting process, and achieved at the worksite by their contractors;
- The Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for the development, implementation and administration of the safety management system;
- The Director, EHS or the Vice President (VP) Operations, Environmental, Health and Safety Affairs (OEHS) will provide regular updates to CPC on safety status and regulatory changes which impact the safe work practices or the safety management system;
- The VP, OEHS will report to the Board regularly on the corporate safety performance measures;
- The VP, OEHS or the Chief Executive Officer will inform the Board in a timely manner of any significant incident or emerging issue that violates or has the potential to violate this policy.
