riparian restoration project
The Slocan River Riparian Restoration Program, developed in consultation with the Slocan River Streamkeepers, is focused on supporting private landowners and community-based efforts to protect and rehabilitate riparian areas on the River. Financial support by Columbia Power Corporation (CPC)* of $20,000 annually provides funding to public groups and landowners undertaking riparian restoration projects along the Slocan River. A steering committee has been established to help provide guidance to the program and prioritize projects for funding. The steering committee includes representatives from the Streamkeepers, CPC and fisheries agencies.
The Slocan River Streamkeepers are acting as the community liaison and administrator of the program as it complements their mandate and other activities.
Since 2005, 25 projects have been completed at locations throughout the Slocan Valley. Each project is monitored at regular intervals. There will be a detailed evaluation of the entire program in 2010 to assess whether there have been clearly demonstrated improvements in riparian function.
For more information, view the Terms of Reference (PDF) for this project. Landowners or groups interested in restoring or rehabilitating their riparian properties on the Slocan River are invited to contact the Streamkeepers to discuss their projects prior to filling out an application.
