Socio-Economic Monitoring

In order to monitor and report on the social and economic benefits associated with the construction of each of its power projects, Columbia Power Corporation (Columbia Power) has employed an independent, third-party contractor to serve as the Socio-Economic Monitor (the Monitor) for the projects.

The Socio-Economic Monitor objectively monitors and reports both the benefits and impacts that occur as a result of the projects. All reports prepared by the Socio-Economic Monitor are posted to this website when available.

WHY CARRY OUT SOCIO-ECONOMIC MONITORING?

Potential socio-economic benefits are identified in the project approval phase, as part of the environmental assessment process. Monitoring of ongoing socio-economic benefits and impacts are undertaken as a condition of project approval. The objectives of the socio-economic monitoring program are to: Facilitate communication between community stakeholders, agencies, and Columbia Power concerning ongoing impact management issues;
Conduct ongoing measurement of, and reporting on, the actual regional socio-economic impacts of the projects’ construction and operation, in order to facilitate ongoing impact management; and
Document the effectiveness of the proponents' efforts to minimize negative impacts and maximize project benefits to the region.

What is socio-economic monitoring?

By looking at a range of factors the Monitor can gauge the impact the project is having on the local communities and the region (i.e., within a 100 km radius of the project site). The Monitor looks at a number of factors and indicators to measure the benefits and impacts of the project. In addition, the Monitor is flexible and may monitor specific factors and indicators that emerge during the project.
