2008 Columbia Power's Community Christmas Even the Grey Cup couldn’t stop the success of Columbia Power Corporation’s Third Annual Community Christmas on Sunday, November 23rd, 2008. This free event, held at the Castlegar Recreation Complex, was open to the entire community, and close to 350 people came out to participate in the festivities. During the day, visitors were treated to the musical talents of many young local musicians—ranging from acappella Christmas carols to a rock band made up of Stanley Humphreys high school students. There were cupcake walks and prizes galore, but the highlight of the event was a variety of Christmas crafts that could be made by children of all ages from an assortment of recycled materials. Old CDs and CD cases, empty plastic coffee cream bottles, blocks of wood and scraps of material, paper and wool were transformed with the help of glitter glue and magic into Christmas tree ornaments, recipe card holders, penguins, fridge magnets and more. There were many smiling faces as youngsters proudly showed off their creations. Also on hand were many costumed characters who interacted with the children, including the Cat and the Hat, Jack Frost and everyone’s favourite, Dozer Doug. In addition to the craft making and entertainment, Columbia Power sponsored a free public skate in the arena from 1pm until 2:30pm, with over 80 skaters taking part. Community Day - June 21 Approximately 1000 residents from the Castlegar and West Kootenay region joined Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust in celebrating the official opening of the Brilliant Expansion Project. Public tours of the powerhouse's service bay were offered with members of Columbia Power's and Columbia Basin Trust's staff providing an overview of the workings of the hydro facility. The Honourable Richard Neufeld, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, led a special procession of CPC and CBT staff and directors, along with local and regional government officials, across the Brilliant Dam and down to the Brilliant Expansion through the access tunnel. Once there, Minister Neufeld, cut a ribbon across the entrance to the turbine headcover, officially announcing the opening of the facility. Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust would like to thank all community members who came out for the day along with all staff and volunteers who helped run such a successful event. |
